Tokyo is the most expensive city for expats
Tokyo passes Moscow as the most expensive city in the world for foreigners to live in, according to a survey by Mercer.
Consulting firm Mercer has examined prices in 143 cities, and it appears that changes in exchange rates have made cities in the U.S., China and the Middle East much more expensive than last year. The two Japanese cities of Tokyo and Osaka is in the top, mostly because of the strong yen. Tokyo is three times more expensive than the cheapest city in the study South African Johannesburg.
The top ten has been rearranged. Moscow, which last year topped the list, is now in third place, Swiss Geneva in fourth and Hong Kong in fifth place. Swiss Zurich is six, seven Copenhagen, followed by New York, Beijing and Singapore. Many currencies including the euro and the British pound, has weakened considerably against the strong U.S. dollar, which has received a number of European cities to fall in ranking, “says Nathalie Constantin-Metral, researcher at Mercer, to AFP.
